What is oral cancer?
Oral cancer is a cancer that can affect any part of the oral cavity. When oral cancer is caught in its early stages, it can often be effectively treated. However, if oral cancer advances into more serious stages before it is diagnosed, it can be deadly. Our dentist and dental team at Joy Dental are trained in identifying the signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities, and we will conduct a thorough screening for oral cancer during each routine checkup at our office.
What are the signs of oral cancer?
In some cases, oral cancer has no noticeable symptoms. The following are common symptoms and signs of oral cancer that our dentist will check for during your oral cancer screening:
- Leukoplakia — This is a hardened grey or white, slightly raised lesion that may occur anywhere inside the mouth. Leukoplakia may be cancerous or may become cancerous if not properly treated.
- Red or white patches and sores — We will check for red patches on the front and sides of the tongue and on the floor of the mouth. We also look for pink or white patches that fail to heal and for slow-healing sores that bleed easily, which may be signs of pathologic (cancerous) changes.
- Lumps — Soreness, lumps or general thickening of tissues anywhere in the mouth or throat may be indicative of pathological problems.
